Searching Line is a song cycle composed and recorded in March 2020, the week before the pandemic lockdown began. Inspired in part by Josef Albers' book Interaction of Color and conceived for the Ed O'Brien signature Stratocaster with sustaining pick up, the recording was performed solo, without overdubs, in a single afternoon. As the weeks wore on, with live music shutdown in Austin and nationwide, Goodrich invited his longtime collaborator Mike Meadows (Hayes Carll, Shawn Colvin) to contribute acoustic and processed hand percussion with the only instruction being to follow his own intuition. The resulting album is a 42-minute contemplative sonic landscape. Minor tonalities, floating melodies, and ambient textures create a mood of suspension and weightlessness. Marked by calmness with an undertow of uncertainty, the work is reminiscent of Brian Eno's Music for Airports and David Lang's A Passing Measure.
